People often think of San Diego in California, but our Texan San Diego is located on the San Diego Creek and the Texas-Mexican Railway at the intersection of state highways 44 and 359 and Farm Road 1329. It is 16 miles northeast of Benavides, 24 miles southeast of Freer, and 52 miles west of Corpus Christi.1
Long before our residents settled down in this area, San Diego was inhabited by transients. It was around 1800 when San Diego de Arriba and San Diego de Abajo, “two grants totalling eight leagues of land, were granted by the Spanish government to Julián Flores and his son Ventura.” These grants were surveyed in the year 1806 by José Faustino Contreras. Julián Flores and Ventura arrived in 1809 and were grated their deed in 1812. It was thought that the first settlers may have been Julián Flores's herdsmen who had settled on his ranch in 1815. Four years later, the Flores family authorized an agent to find a town "at the place called San Diego."1
In 1848, Ventura Flores sold land along the north bank of the San Diego Creek to Pablo Perez, who then built stone houses and where he and his family lived. Perez later ended up changing the name to Perezville, but in 1852 it was renamed San Diego when the first post office was established in the Casa Blanca.1
San Diego began to prosper and grow and in 1875, when the population consisted of 500 Mexicans and 50 Americans. San Diego went through several changes, especially around the time of the Civil War, and the population fluctuated greatly between 1920 and 1930.1 What never changed was the fact that it continued to grow.
