How to Pack Knives for a Move

Pack Your Kitchen Knives for Moving

Kitchen knives are a cooking staple, but they can easily be a hazard when improperly packed. While your big collection of chef’s knives is undoubtedly great to have when you’re dicing up your vegetables, now that you’re moving that collection probably looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

Not to fear, with some careful packing those knives can reach your new home without damaging any of your other items or injuring anyone. Here are five steps to ensure your knives are packed well.

Step 1: Clean and Dry Your Knives Before Packing

Before you start packing your knives, or any of your dishes, you should ensure they are free of food particles and dry. This is especially important if your knives are going into storage for any length of time as dirty knives invite pests, rust, and corrosion.

Step 2: Wrap Your Knives

If you have knife blade covers, put them on the knives before wrapping them.

For large, sharp knives, cut some pieces of cardboard to sheath around the blade before you wrap them.

Use 2-3 layers of thick packing paper and wrap your knives individually. Once the knife is wrapped in packing paper, you can wrap an additional layer of protection around them. Kitchen towels, bubble wrap, or paper towels are all good choices for extra protection.

If your knives live in a knife block, you can tape the knives into the block and wrap the entire block. Make sure you tape the knives into the block securely so that if the block shifts during transit no knives will slip out.

Step 3: Tape Your Wrapped Knife Bundles Closed

Use paper packing tape and secure your knife bundles closed so the knives do not work their way out of their packaging.

On the paper tape, write an arrow that indicates which way the knife blade faces so that you know the correct end to open when unpacking.

Step 4: Pack Your Knives into Boxes Carefully

Get a small moving box and line the bottom of the box with kitchen towels, packing paper, or bubble wrap. Once the lining is in place, lay the knife packages or the knife block into your box. Fill any empty space in the box with lighter kitchen items like hot pads or towels, or use additional packing material like packing paper or packing peanuts.

Step 5: Label Your Boxes of Knives

Once your boxes are taped shut, label them as kitchen boxes containing knives. This will help you and your movers know to be careful with them as you unpack.

Now that your knives are safely boxed for the move, you can continue to packing the rest of your kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
