How to Pack Kitchen Utensils

Your Serving Spoons Need Packing

Get packing advice for how to pack kitchen utensils from the expert packers at All My Sons Moving & Storage.

The kitchen poses some unique challenges when you go to pack it for your move. There’s perishable food, pantry goods, sharp knives, and essentials you need to pack last and unload first.

Measuring spoons, whisks, tongs, and other kitchen cutlery items might not be as breakable as glassware or as hazardous as knives, but you should still pack them with careful consideration.

All My Sons Moving & Storage aims to empower families with the tips and tricks that will make their move stress-free. Read on to find out how to pack your kitchen utensils well.

Step One: Get Rid of Items You No Longer Use

A simple way to make your move less expensive and less time-consuming is to move less stuff. If you are moving to a smaller kitchen, you will want to downsize your utensil collection to ensure only the items you will use in your new home are taking up space in your moving boxes. Even if you are not downsizing, it’s still wise to declutter before a move.

Evaluate your kitchen items and consider how often you use them. If the answer is not often and the item is not sentimental, donate or sell the item and send it on its merry way.

Step Two: Separate Your Essentials

Your essentials are the items that you require to function on a daily basis. You will likely use them up until the moment of your move and then need them again within 24 hours of arriving at your new home. These items should be packed last and unloaded first.

Keep some silverware sets for each member of your household as well as any utensils you need for cooking your last pre-move meals and first post-move meals set aside with your essentials stash. You will pack these close to last in your final kitchen box.

Step Three: Wrap Utensils

Ensure your utensils are clean and dry before you pack them.

Sort your utensils by type and size. You can bundle like-sized utensils together and wrap them in packing paper.

Tie forks, butter knives, and spoons together with twist ties or rubber bands. You can put the bundled silverware back in its organizer and wrap packing paper or plastic wrap around the entire organizer and then pack the item in the bottom of a kitchen box.

Step Four: Put Heavy, Large Items in Boxes First

If you are packing kitchen utensils with other, heavier kitchen items then you should use smaller boxes to keep the weight of your boxes low.

Kitchen utensils can be packed after much heavier kitchen items like pots or pans. Once the heavy items are in the bottoms of your boxes, you can add the packing paper bundles with the utensils in them next.

Step Five: Fill Empty Space in Boxes

Eliminate as much empty space in your boxes as possible. Once the kitchen utensils are packed in your boxes, you can fill empty space with lighter kitchen items like hot pads, towels, and oven mitts. If you do not have any other light kitchen items on hand, then use packing paper or packing peanuts to fill the extra space. This keeps items from shifting too much in transit.

Always check the weight of your boxes before you close them to ensure they are not overloaded. If the box is too heavy to lift, repack it with some lighter items inside.
