How to Pack Kitchen Towels and Hot Pads

Time to Pack Your Soft Kitchen Items

Soft kitchen items like aprons, towels, hot pads, rags, and oven mitts are light and hardy. When you’re packing up your kitchen, these items prove especially useful for helping to cushion your more fragile kitchen items.

Separate out your kitchen essentials and then get ready to wash and roll your soft kitchen items.

Step 1: Declutter and Downsize

Is your kitchen drawer where you keep your hot pads overflowing? Your move is an ideal time to think about what you want to keep in your life and what you should let go of. Before you pack, make sure you declutter your kitchen drawers. Sort your kitchen soft items into three major buckets:

  • Discard: Damaged items that no longer properly serve their function should be recycled or trashed.

  • Donate: Items in good condition that you do not use often should be given away to your favorite local charity or non-profit.

  • Keep: These are the items in good condition that you love and use often.

Once you have cut down on your collection of soft kitchen items, proceed to pack the remainder.

Step 2: Wash and Dry Your Items

Before you move, you should run a few loads of laundry and make sure all your linens, clothes, and soft kitchen items are clean and dry for your move. This step is especially important if your items are going into storage for any length of time. Dirty items covered in food particles invite pests.

Step 3: Sort, Fold, and Roll

Separate your soft kitchen items into categories based on size and type of item. If you have fragile kitchen items to pack like glassware or plates, consider packing your soft kitchen items around those items. You can wrap kitchen towels or aprons around plates to cushion them and keep them from knocking against each other.

When you have packed your fragile items well, then then fold the remainder of your soft kitchen items to go into the tops of kitchen boxes. You can also save space in your kitchen boxes by rolling larger towels or hot pads rather than folding them.

Step 4: Fill Empty Box Space

Put soft kitchen items in the tops of kitchen boxes to fill up any empty space. This helps stabilize the items inside and keeps them from shifting around too much during transit.

Always check the weight of your boxes before you seal them to ensure they are not overloaded. If the box is too heavy to lift, repack it by taking out heavy kitchen items and switching them out for light kitchen items like your towels and hot pads.

Step 5: Label Your Boxes

It’s important to stay organized during your move. Once you go to seal a box, label the box with its contents right away. You can also create a moving inventory to keep track of where you stashed your kitchen towels and hot pads, which is especially helpful if they all wound up in different boxes.

Oven Mitts Away, Time to Move

Your soft kitchen items are now snug in their boxes helping to cushion other items. Now you can move with peace of mind.
