Mover Beware: Glassware is Fragile

From packing your kitchen knives to packing your pots and pans, the kitchen is one of the more challenging rooms to prepare for your move. One of the specialty items that could be a little tricky to pack up will be your glassware. Ensure your glassware is safe and secure for the journey by packing your items well.

Remember to separate your kitchen essentials to go into a separate box and then follow these five steps to packing your glassware with care:

Step 1: Wash and Dry Your Glassware

Before you pack, run your dishwasher or hand-wash your glass items to get them squeaky clean and dry.

If your glassware will be going into storage for any length of time this step is crucial. Food particles and moisture on your glassware invite pests, mold, and corrosion. So, prepare your items for storage by making sure they are clean first.

Once your glassware items are clean and dry, sort them into categories based on their weight or type.

Step 2: Wrap Glassware in Packing Paper

Ready the packing paper, it’s time to start wrapping up your glassware. You can also use soft kitchen items like towels or aprons to help wrap your glassware.

For big glass items, take a sheet of packing paper and roll it around your glass item. Continue rolling paper around your glass item until you have difficulty feeling the corners of your item. If the paper does not easily stay in place, tape the bundle together.

If your glasses are stackable, wrap each glass in packing paper individually before you nest the glasses inside one another. This will help keep them from scratching or damaging each other.

Step 3: Put the Heaviest Glassware in First

Choose a smaller moving box to pack your glassware. The less empty space left in the box the better.

Put a layer of packing paper, bubble wrap, or a soft kitchen towel on the very bottom of your glassware box to provide a comfortable cushion for your glass items. Next, pack the box with your heaviest glassware items. This is the time for the big glass casserole dish or the huge glass serving bowl. Once the heavy items have been packed, they provide a stable base for the rest of your glass items.

When you have filled the box with all the glassware that will comfortably fit, check the weight of your box to make sure it is not overloaded. A box too heavy to lift is a box too heavy to move, so repack that box before you finish it off and seal it.

Step 4: Fill All Available Space

Once the box is packed comfortably with glassware, add light, soft kitchen items to the top of your box to fill up any extra space. If you are out of light kitchen items or would prefer to pack those in a separate box, then add additional packing material like bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or packing paper to the top of your box.

This is to keep items from shifting during transit.

Step 5: Label Your Glassware Boxes

Seal up your box with tape and write out the contents of the box on the top flap of the box. If you have extra money for moving supplies, you can grab different colored tape or labels to color-code your boxes by room.

Always label your glassware boxes as “FRAGILE” so that you and your movers know to handle the box with care. If your box must stay oriented upright, then add an arrow to the box with “This Side Up” as well.

Glassware Secure for the Move

Now that your glassware has been packed well, you can make your move with confidence. Move on to packing the towels and hot pads or packing the perishable food.
