Time to Pack Your Media Collection

The professional movers providing packing services at All My Sons Moving & Storage offer tips on how to pack your disc media collections of CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays.

Your disc media collections including your CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays contain precious films, music, and games that you’d rather keep on hand for years to come. A physical media collection can pose a challenge to move, especially if you have a sizable collection.

Provided you have already downsized your collection as much as you are able, these are the next steps you should take to pack up your media collection for your next move.

Step 1: Use Small Boxes

To protect your discs from scratches, you should aim to keep them either in their original cases or in a disc-organizer. You can purchase disc organizers on Amazon, Target, and Etsy. Alternatively, you can purchase new CD jewel cases at Sleeve City and Disc Makers

Use the smallest boxes that can comfortably accommodate your collections. Discs add up in weight very quickly, and you should never attempt to lift an oversized and overloaded box.

Step 2: Line Your Box With Bubble Wrap

For extra protection to your disc’s jewel cases and keep cases, line your small box with bubble wrap prior to packing the box. You can also wrap individual jewel cases and keep cases if the items are of particular value, such as a special-edition case.

Step 3: Pack Disc Cases Vertically

Sort your jewel cases and keep cases by size and shape. Ideally, CD jewel cases will be packed together, DVD keep cases will be packed together, and Blu-ray cases will be packed together.

Orient your media collections in the small box vertically. This can help keep cases from crushing or cracking one another.

Step 4: Fill Empty Box Space

When no more discs can comfortably fit inside your box, fill any extra box space with packing material like bubble wrap, packing paper, or packing peanuts. Before you seal your box, make sure you can lift the box. If you are unable to lift the box, it is packed too heavy. Repack the box with more light items inside and then attempt to lift it again.

Step 5: Label Your Boxes or Create an Inventory

When you seal your boxes, label them. To avoid hunting through a dozen boxes for the disc you’re looking for, consider creating a moving inventory to identify exactly which discs went in what boxes.

If you are a movie or TV lover, try keeping an inventory of the media you own through an app like Letterboxd, TV Time, or Fable.

CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays Packed for the Move

Now with the discs all packed, you can move on to packing your books or your computer to finish up the home office, study, or library space.
