Create a Quick, Realistic Moving Checklist

Your first order of business should be to assess your moving needs. A full moving checklist might be more than you have time to handle but take a few minutes to jot down your basic plan. While every move is different and not every timeframe can accommodate all the things you could put on a moving checklist, there are some essential steps most moves must take.

Here are some fast ideas to put on your moving checklist:

  • Purchase Packing Supplies: You may not have the luxury of being able to meticulously count out how many boxes you need. Go ahead and buy packs of boxes and supplies in bulk. Some retailers will allow you to return unused boxes if you have the receipt, or you could always save the extra boxes for your next move.

  • Schedule Utilities for Disconnection: Call your utility providers for electricity, gas, internet, etc. and either update them with your new address for transfer of services or schedule disconnection. Give these companies your new address so that you can be reached with any final bills.

  • Book Your Movers: If you are down to the wire, search for companies that offer same-day moving services. Be sure to choose movers that are licensed and insured. Get a few quotes, read reviews, and book as soon as you’ve made your decision.

  • Make a Donation Run: If you combine decluttering with packing, you’ll likely end up with a mountain of stuff to give away. You can add a quick donation run to your move and get to your new place feeling so much lighter.

  • Setup Utilities: Call your local providers for utilities and set up your essentials before you move in.

  • Arrange Childcare or Pet Care: If you have a young child or pet that will be underfoot during the move, make some calls to family or friends to see if you can arrange for their care. When family and friends are not available, you can use a professional service.

Once you have your moving checklist created, arrange the items by priority and tackle the highest priority items first. If you’re still struggling with moving procrastination, try a few of our tips on how to get started in this guide here.

Pack on the Double

With limited time to pack, you’ll need to move at top speed. We recommend setting up some boxes in each area you need to pack so you can grab the next one as you fill them. There are some basic rules you should follow when packing to make sure your move goes smoothly:

  • Pack the Non-Essentials First: The best items to pack first are the ones you are not going to need again soon. Some great places to start are with your off-season clothes, back closet memorabilia, and holiday decorations. Then you can move up the hierarchy of need room by room.

  • Purge as You Pack: Your move will be significantly more manageable if you off-load excess items you do not need to take with you. Have a trash bag on hand for the small items that should be thrown away and gather items that should be donated in a box.

  • Label Boxes Clearly: There’s nothing quite as nerve-wracking as searching for something you know is in one of the boxes in your box-mountain. Label your boxes by room and write out important contents on the top in as much detail as possible.

  • Use Your Own Items as Wrapping: You can save yourself some packing paper and bubble wrap by wrapping your more breakable items in your towels, socks, and sheets. We recommend you still keep items together by room if possible.

  • Skip the Perishables: Perishable food items from the fridge or freezer should either be moved in a cooler or an insulated bag, but only if your move is short and you are setting up your kitchen again quickly. If you are moving long-distance and do not have time to eat what’s left in your fridge, you should give items away or donate them.

  • Pack Your Items to Unload First Separately: Once the non-essentials are packed, you should pack the necessities for each room last. For the kitchen, these might include your appliances you use every day like the coffee maker and your silverware. Your box for the bedroom will have clean bed sheets and your clothes for the first week in your new home. The bathroom box will likely contain your toilet paper and soap. Label the boxes as “Open First,” so that you know which boxes to unload as soon as you get to your new home.

Remember that you don’t have a lot of time, so pack quickly and efficiently. Always remember to put heavier items in the bottoms of boxes and to fill empty space with packing paper or lighter items. You always want to be sure that you can lift your boxes when it comes time to move them, so pack heavy items like books in smaller boxes and lighter items like clothes in larger boxes.

Make Sure You Have Your Essentials with You

for your daily medication sounds about as appealing as pulling out your eyebrows one hair at a time. Be sure to pack the things you need daily separate from the items that can wait and include any items you might need in case of emergency in this bag as well.

You can pack these items in a bag or box, just be sure to always keep it with you on-hand. Here are some examples of items that should go in your essentials stash:

  • Medications: Include the medicines you take daily as well as any medicine you need in case of emergency.

  • Overnight Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, floss, and maybe soap. You might need these items in transit if your move takes several days and you will want these items almost immediately once you reach your new home.

  • Change of Clothes: Even if you do not move overnight, you will likely want a change of clothes on hand in case you’re not able to unpack all your clothes the same day you arrive at your destination.

  • Important Documents: It is a good idea to keep all the important documentation you need for your move such as rental contracts or government IDs in a folder together for your move.

  • Wallet and Keys: These items might typically always be on you, but just to be safe keep them in a back pocket, purse, or your essentials bag during your move.

  • Boxcutter: When you arrive at your new home, you’re going to need something to open all those moving boxes with. Make sure you don’t pack your boxcutter or anything else you might need to start settling into your new place.

  • First Aid Kit: These are ideal for treating minor injuries during your move and you want to have one on hand just in case.

  • Snacks: When you’re in for a long moving day, you might need a quick pick me up at certain intervals. Pack some snacks you can eat on the go.

  • Water Bottles: Your move will likely make you thirsty. Have some water on hand to rehydrate yourself and your loved ones.

  • Pet Essentials: If you have pets, keep your pet essentials like extra food, comfort toys, or a leash with the rest of your essentials.

  • Children’s Essentials: If you have young children you will need to keep formula, diapers, baby food, baby wipes, or comfort toys on hand as well.

With your essentials stash you will never have to worry about finding an item you need. It will always be with you. Make sure each member of your household has their own essential items with them at all times.

Call Up the Junk Haulers

If you need a space cleared quickly or an item gone yesterday, the perfect people to call are the junk haulers. They sweep in, grab your bulk trash items, and then cart it away so you don’t have to deal with it. You can pay them to clear out a space or get a quick quote for one or two large items. Once the items are gone, you will be free to make your move, and you’ll feel so much lighter and less burdened doing it.
