How to Register to Vote in Austin

Austin, Texas is known as the "live music capital" as well as their delicious bbq. The arts and entertainment scene is also vibrant so hopefully you have finished unpacking, so you can enjoy it. After everything s finalized and you've settled into your new house, the last thing on your list, which you, like many others, probably forgot, is registering to vote in Austin. Are You Eligible to Vote in Austin?

You can register to vote if:

- You are a United States Citizen

- You are a resident of the county in Austin where you submit voting application

- You are 18 years old on Election Day; or at least 17 years and 10 months when you register

- You are NOT a convicted felon (you may be eligible if you have completed sentence, probation, and parole)

- You have not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote

If you have met the requirements above, you can proceed to the next step.1

Get an Application to Vote in Austin

You can register to vote in person at your county Voter's Registration Office or by mail when you obtain an application through your local:

- Austin library

- Government office

- High school

If you decide to fill out an application online, you must print it, fill it out, sign it, and mail it to the voter's registrar in your county of residence.

Fill Out the Application

When you are registering to vote in Austin make sure you are at least 17 years and 10 months old when you fill out the application. You will also need to make sure you have:

- A valid Texas driver's license number OR

- A personal identification number issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

If you don't have a license number, you can provide the last four digitals of your social security number. If you do not have a social security number, you need to state that fact. Read the entire application and fill it out truthfully and honestly. Once finished you can mail it or drop it off at the Voter Registrar's office.

Deadline and Changes

In order to vote in an election, make sure you have everything completed and postmarked at least 30* days before that election.If you have moved to another county, you must re-register to vote. If you change your name, please notify you Voter Registrar in writing about the name change.

"*Per Sec. 13.143(e) of the Texas Election Code, if the 30th day before the date of an election is a Saturday, Sunday, or legal state or national holiday, an application is considered to be timely if it is submitted to the registrar on or before the next regular business day." 2

Confirm Your Voter's Registration

To confirm whether or not you are registered to vote in Austin, you can use any of the following criteria:

- Texas driver's license number + date of birth

- Voter Unique Identifier (appears on your voter registration certificate) + date of birth

- First and last name + county + date of birth
