To help take the stress out of your moving experience, we answered some of the most common questions our team receives.
Service members at Joint Base San Antonio, including Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, and Randolph, can choose a Personally Procured Move and hire a mover directly. Confirm your entitlements with the transportation office first. Then choose a mover that provides a detailed written estimate and can schedule around your report date. It should also give you the receipts and weight documentation you need for reimbursement.
Texas requires movers that handle moves within the state to hold an active TxDMV certificate. Ask for the number and check it in the TxDMV Truck Stop lookup, where you can also see the maximum rates the mover has filed. Licensed movers must give you a written proposal and a Rights and Responsibilities sheet before loading. TxDMV also advises getting every term in writing rather than relying on verbal agreements.
Ask if you are moving downtown or near the Pearl. Spurs games at the Frost Bank Center, conventions near the River Walk, and holiday events downtown can close streets and fill parking. A mover that knows the city will check event calendars, suggest a morning start, and plan its route around closures. Ask how traffic time is billed before you book.
Ask two questions: Will your own crew and truck do my move, and what is your USDOT number? Then check that number on the FMCSA website, which shows whether the company is registered as a carrier or a broker. Brokers often have no local trucks or address in San Antonio. A direct carrier gives you one company to hold accountable.
Before you book, confirm the company's registration, whether its own crew will move you, and how it prices the job. Ask what is included in the estimate, what could change it, and what liability coverage applies. Ask how the company plans around traffic and weather delays. Get the answers in writing so you can compare San Antonio movers side by side.
When you compare San Antonio movers, watch for a large cash deposit, a price given without seeing your belongings, or a refusal to put the estimate in writing. Other warning signs include no USDOT number, a business name that changes, and unmarked trucks. A quote far below everyone else's is another red flag. Check the company on the FMCSA website before you sign.
